Tomorrow is weigh- in day. I last weighed myself a week ago and was pleased to note that I had lost three pounds in a week since joining the gym. At present I am going twice daily to the gym and my target is to burn off 300 calories on each visit. On Saturdays I go once, and on Sunday I take a break. On Sunday morning I have a full English Breakfast as a treat; but as this consists of mainly protein, it does not seem to interfere with my weight loss.

This last week I have stuck to my low carb diet. The diet consists mainly of meat and quiche plus veg, with one serving a day of bran fibre, a banana and a handful of raisins. So far this diet seems to be working well. I rarely feel hungry. I have also included unlimited amounts of Green Tea and Camomile Tea to keep me hydrated and to keep those hunger pangs at bay.

Tomorrow I am really hoping for another three pound weight loss, but I will be content with two if that is all I have managed to achieve. Of course what I would love is a four pound loss, but then I have high expectations. If I manage less than a two pound weight loss then I seriously will have to question how much impact my punishing exercise is having on my quest to lose weight. Of course there is a small caveat to this, I know that exercise will build muscle and this weights more than fat, so at some point I will plateau.

I have been going to the gym every day. And I have also been motivating myself by watching programmes such as “I used to be fat!” The only problem with these programmes is that they are totally unrealistic in the real world. I don’t have a personal trainer on hand, I don’t have constant medical supervision of my training and I don’t have six hours a day to train.

I am aiming to burn off 500 cals a day, but today I decided to see if I could get close to 1000. Over doing it is not good; and in the long run it only puts you off exercise due to injury and damage. Therefore, I will be returning to my 500 cals a day goal.

I only wish I had a trainer and a personal chef to help me through the next 8 weeks of torture. My next weigh in day is Thursday, only three days away. And if I have not lost any weight, I will be very disappointed.

My diet is now more varied than the very low carb version that I started off with. I was really craving some fruit and veg, so this has been added. Last night I had a skinless chicken breast boiled with lemon and a salad, which was surprisingly tasty. For lunch I have had half a chicken breast and salad. I am ditching the lovely peanuts that I have been snacking on, and going to try eating smaller meals more frequently. I am also adding a blend of herbal tea which is serving to reduce the appetite.

Yesterday I rejoined the gym. I quit last year mainly to save money. However, a lack of space at home to exercise combined with the appalling UK weather, means that I am now thirty nine pounds a month poorer. Later on today I will have to endure another pointless induction programme. This consists of a track- suited employee telling me how to use all the weights and equipment that I will never again touch. I only want to use the treadmill and the cross trainer. I have no intention of setting foot in that weight room with all those buff types, it is way too intimidating.

Last night I had a little bit of a binge. Sugar cravings got hold of me and I ate two shortbread biscuits, an Atkins chocolate bar and a small portion of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. I felt bad, especially as today is my weigh in day. Of course this binge has yet to show on the scales and my weight has remained the same as it did on my last sneak weigh in. Can I go a whole week this time without getting on the scales?

The Beyond Skincare Company uses organic ingredients and natural oils to create a wonderful range of natural skincare products.

To try out this range I recommend indulging in the Organic Shea Delight Body Butter Hearts. These dainty looking hearts come in an organza bag and contain shea butter, cocoa butter and olive oil to deliver moisture to the skin. Just warm the product up between your hands and then massage into the skin. This is a great alternative to messy lotions, and the wonderful aromas create an added sense of luxury. As this product contains no essential oils it’s great for use in pregnancy.

This is a great gift product or introduction to the range. If you wish to try more products in the range a good start would be the travel/trial pack. This contains many of the key products, so it’s great way to test them out before making a commitment to full sizes.

Yesterday was a very strange day. I did not really feel hungry most of the day and consumed a chicken breast, a slice of ham and a slice of corned beef. In the evening I went out for a steak and salad with extra veg. I confess that a few chips past my lips and a little pepper steak sauce. But all in all, the day seemed to go well.

I have been feeling good about resisting the temptation to have a glass of wine in the evening, only to find the latest news reports suggest that women in their forties who drink 1 -2 glasses of wine each day have better health in their 70’s. That said, I always find that drinking alcohol lowers my blood sugar and starts off cravings for snack food. So for now at least, I will stay off the wine.

The diet is still on track. Despite promising myself that I was not going to weigh myself until Thursday this week, on Sunday I could not resist the lure of the scales. I was very happy to note that I had lost another pound.

Unfortunately for me it has not stopped raining since Sunday and this mean my exercise plan (which very surprisingly, I was enjoying) has come to a halt. Oh how I wish I lived in a sunnier climate.

Even though I am following a low carb diet, every now and again some carbs find me. Last night it was a toasted chicken and ham salad sandwich, with light mayo and no butter. I figure that I am on a low carb diet, not a no carb diet, but if I am to include bread, it should really be the lower carb variety, not a standard supermarket white loaf.
At present I think I am most proud of my lack of alcohol consumption. I am sure that a lack of beer and wine in my diet is a good contributor to the initial success of my diet.

I have decided that taking a 2 mile walk three times a day is a bit impractical, so I am aiming for doing it twice (weather permitting).

Yesterday I did get in my three walks, and stuck to my low cab, high protein diet. I have found omelette makers a real help for my breakfast, which I tend to have around 11am. Two eggs, a little ham and some cheese in an omelette maker really does the trick, and it is so easy.

I snacked on nuts, which are really too high in calories and salt to be very useful, but they are a great high protein convenient snack when you are craving carbs. And when I crave something sweet, I have an Atkins protein bar. (To my shame I scoffed two yesterday.) To finish off, dinner was a skinless chicken breast, two slices of ham, and some cheese, accompanied by some cucumber slices, low fat mayo and half a tomato.

After all my walking and my low carb diet, I did feel that the weight should have dropped off me yesterday and so I could not resist a peak at the scales this morning. No change in the last few days, but I suppose you should only really weigh yourself once a week. I think Thursday should be my weigh in day. I will try and hold off again until then.

I never used to have a problem with my weight; I was one of those annoying people who could eat a whole family sized chocolate bar and never gain a pound. But the last twelve years have been a very different story. Owing to medications and changes ino lifestyle, I have found my weight to yo- yo dramatically, and consequently I have clothes in my wardrobe that vary from a size 8 to 16 ( that is a size 4 to 12 dress size American).

So now I am a woman on a mission to drop 29 pounds in the next two months. I had a big push on this last year, and was doing well until I had an accident and dropped some exercise equipment on my foot and fractured a bone. A broken foot is not conducive to an active lifestyle or any form of exercise regime. Now I have found that I have gained well over 14 pounds since this time last year. This has got to stop! This is why I am putting this weight loss blog post online in the hope that the discipline of its upkeep will keep me motivated.

I am a 46 year old recent grandmother. I really don’t want to reach 50 a complete blob. So in an effort to kick-start my latest weight loss attempt, I have been doing the following during the last two weeks:

Slim Fast – I used these years ago in my twenties when I found I had put on 4 pounds (if only that were my problem now). The formula seems to have changed. After a few days I have found these shakes way too sweet and abandoned the remaining ones in my fridge.
Atkins Shakes – I had great success with a low carb Atkins diet some years ago, so I thought these would be a great idea. The artificial sweetener in these has a really unpleasant smell and after taste. So these too have been abandoned.

Having used both of the above I have found that I have lost 4 pounds in the last two weeks, so it is with regret that I am letting go of my shakes.
Therefore at present I am trying to stick to a low carb diet and attempting to add in walking as exercise .

I am trying to think back to a time when I could eat as I pleased and did not put on weight. What was I doing at the time and can I replicate it? Certainly I was more active. My walk to school and back was a mile in total each day, so hopefully adding walking to my day should help considerably. So today I have walked approximately 2 miles in about 40 minutes. Weather permitting I would like to try and do this three times a day, but I think that this may be a bit ambitious.

A study by the literacy trust has revealed that children have more exposure to mobile phones and computers, than more traditional reading material such as novels.

Researchers found that occasions of frequent reading declined with age, leading some teenagers to shun books altogether. The findings of the National Literacy Trust will come as no surprise to some. Britain has also dropped from seventeenth place to the twenty-fifth in an international league table of reading standards.

In Britain, one out of every six adults struggles to reach the literacy levels expected of an eleven year old; and with thirteen percent of children failing to read a single book in the last month (according to the Literacy Trust), it can be assumed that these children may go on to grow into the illiterate adults of the future.

The literacy trust study indicated that technology based materials are the dominant reading choice for children. Text messages were highlighted as the most popular reading material for children of all ages.

A review of mineral powder makeup from the Green People.

I am on a quest to find more natural makeup solutions. I have nothing against more traditional brands, in fact I use them regularly, but if I can find a natural product that performs well, I like to give it a try.

Mineral make up is all the rage, but not all mineral make up is equal. In a previous article ( Mineral makeup; is it really good for the skin?), I examined the use of Bismuth Oxychloride, a known irritant, in mineral makeup preparations. So I was very relieved to learn that the Green People don’t use Bismuth in their mineral powder. In fact, their philosophy is to use natural and organic ingredients and to avoid harsh and unnecessary chemicals in their skin care and makeup preparations.

I tested the pressed mineral powder in a Caramel shade. This is a three in one product, as it’s a foundation, powder and an SPF 15 sunscreen. It’s free from Parabens, Mineral Oils and Silicones and is recommended for those with a delicate sensitive skin.

The powder has a smooth consistency and went on evenly. I was surprised at how good the coverage was, and generally I was very impressed. I felt that I could have benefited with a light bronzer to warm up the skin tone a little, but I note that the Green People have thought of that and stock a pressed mineral powder in a Maple shade which they suggest can be used as a bronzer. I would recommend the use of a kabuki brush for an even application, and as it happens, the Green People sell a rather stylish looking kabuki brush with a bamboo handle.

There are three shades to choose from in this pressed powder range: Maple, Honey and Caramel. I chose the Caramel shade as this product has yellow undertones and is great for calming down the look of skin which is prone to redness. In fact, I would recommend this product just for that property alone. If you have thread veins, rosacea, or are just prone to redness on the skin, then this would be an excellent product to use. The Caramel shade would be great to sweep over your face on top of your existing foundation to counteract any redness; it’s great to use over the eyelids to even out skin tone, and is perfect for correcting any heavy handed blush application. So it is for these reasons I suggest that this product is a ” must buy.” It’s versatility in your makeup bag means that this mineral powder pays for itself.

Priced at £20.45 at the time of writing, the Green People‘s Pressed Mineral Powder is priced well compared to other brands, and is well worth investing in. You can view the range of mineral powders on offer from ther Green People’s website here, and the Caramel Pressed Mineral Powder is available by clicking the following link www.greenpeople.co.uk

A US company based in Georgia is manufacturing chopsticks and exporting them to China. Georgia Chopsticks is producing around two million sets of wooden chopsticks each day and is operating around the clock to keep up with demand. Each set of chopsticks is proudly labelled “Made in the USA”

It would appear that China has a shortage of wood suitable to make the Asian eating utensils, and Georgian Gum Trees, which are abundant in the US southern state, make an excellent raw material as they do not require a harsh chemical bleaching treatment.

When Jae Lee (a Korean American) started the business, banks refused to lend him money because they saw his business model as a crazy idea, and who could blame them? However Mr Lee seems to be holding his own and making his own contribution to redressing the US/China trade gap.

When it has been a long day and you feel hot and sticky, there is nothing like a shower to perk you up. And one of the best products around to help you feel really clean and refreshed is Australian Bodycare Tea Tree Skin Wash.

This product has a nice clean smell and is suitable for all the family to use. Its unisex packing appeals to both men and women, meaning that at last you can have just one product in the bathroom to use rather than lots of branded male and female shower gels.

The two percent tea oil content gives this skin wash antiseptic properties, and this inhibits the growth of bacteria on the skin which may cause body odour and skin breakouts.

One of the best outlets to get this product is QVC as they sometimes do large half litre bottles which offer a real saving.

After a recent beauty blogger meet up, I was given some sample products to try. Never one to let a cosmetic product go to waste, today I am trying Eco Lipstick from the Green People in a Cinnamon shade.

The Eco Lipstick is certified as organic and the rich colour comes from minerals rather than the use of carmine. On looking at the ingredients, it is nice to see natural ingredients such as coconut oil and jojoba oil as well as my favourite, peppermint oil. The peppermint oil seems to give this lipstick its kick. Upon application there is slight tingling sensation, not dissimilar to that found in products designed to temporarily increase lip volume. I am not sure whether that is an intended consequence, or whether the tingle is just the lips reacting to the peppermint. Either way, it is not unpleasant.

The colour coverage is not too intense and the consistency of the bullet was not as dry as I was expecting, and therefore I was pleasantly surprised.

For those wanting a natural product with organic contents and attention paid to recycled packaging, then the Eco Lipstick is certainly one to try. Priced at under £12 on the Green People website, the Eco Lipstick won’t break the bank.

Annabel believes that cooking is fun and a vital life skill that should be taught from an early age. She goes on to say that children as young as eight or nine are more that capable of or preparing a meal if properly supervised.

Allowing children into the kitchen to help prepare a meal once a week gives children a sense of achievement; and is a fantastic way to teach children about household budgets and managing a project. Children enjoy a sense of self-worth and the satisfaction of having produced a meal from scratch.

Annabel says, “It is a very important responsibility to be able to feed yourself and others, and one which cannot be learned too early,” She added that some parents today fight shy of getting their offspring to take on some responsibility, yet this is not helpful in the long-run.

Bamboo is not normally associated with fashion. Indeed we are more used to seeing it on furniture. But recently bamboo has made a name for itself as a great basis for creating breathable fabric which inhibits odour formation. This makes it a great choice for items such as socks and T shirts.

Bamboo is soft to touch, lightweight and increasing in popularity as a choice for fabric blends; even rivalling tradition cotton blends, which have recently seen huge prices increased worldwide.

Wear Chemistry has chosen to use bamboo in their latest fashion range. The brand prides itself on its eco friendly status, and it is using organic bamboo, which it claims has a lower impact on the environment than traditional cotton farming. Their innovatively designed t- shirts use a 70% bamboo, 30% cotton blend.

Wear Chemistry has come up with a stylish collection of t-shirts which not only look great, but are also comfortable to wear; something not normally associated with eco friendly products.

Fears about unemployment, rising food costs and general inflation mean that the recession has taken its toll on the annual family holiday.

A survey of two thousand people has also indicated, that of those who can afford to take a break, it is likely that spending will be curbed with less money spent on dining out. The research indicated that the traditional two week vacation will be replaced by shorter breaks to save money. So that means that idyllic trips to Florida beaches and Disneyworld are out, with those who can get abroad, favouring short all inclusive packages to save money.

ING Bank, who commissioned the survey, say that it is clear people are paying down debts in this difficult economic time. This means that there is less money around for a family holiday.

How to find what you really want on the deep web.

Most internet search engines are currently designed to return what they consider are relevant web sites for keyword search. Unfortunately the algorithms they use to return the results are seriously flawed. The search engines have decided that the most relevant web sites are those that other websites have linked to. Therefore, they consider popular websites the most relevant web sites. A lot of the time this means that major corporations dominate the search engine results pages, or serps as they are known.

Of course often the most popular websites are relevant to keyword search. If you want to find a local plumber and you type in the name of your town and plumber, you are likely to find a relevant result. However, you also might as well look in the Yellow Pages or consult the online Yellow Pages for this kind of internet search. Large internet search engines such as Google or Bing are hardly needed.

But what if you wanted to find out about the MMR vaccine, or more importantly, side effects from the MMR vaccine? Suppose you wanted information that isn’t the domain of the large corporations. Well, if you type in MMR or MMR side effects into the most popular search engine, Google, you will find the first page is loaded with results from newspapers and health department websites. None have an in-depth analysis of some of the more controversial issues. They are mostly snippets informing the public that the latest research indicates all is well. This is information that has been feed to them by big pharmaceutical companies who have a large financial interest in feeding this information to the public. This perception may or may not be true. But one thing is for certain, and that is that currently, you will not find a website run by parents who believe that their children have been damaged by the MMR vaccine on the first page of Google when using the search terms described.

It is likely when you are searching for information on the MMR that you already know what the doctor information leaflets say. What you are most likely looking for is more in-depth information so that you can take a balanced view and make up your own mind. After all, this is what real research is all about. However Google’s algorithm is weighted to return websites in search results which are considered as authority sources; and this often means newspapers or government websites which attract lots of back links.

So if conducting keyword searches in Google is not giving you the all the information you want, how do you go about the finding information? Well you could click on the right hand side and look at the Google Ad words. The advertisements here are often placed by companies that cannot get listed in the first pages results. Also, you can try what is known as long tail keyword searches. If we are to continue with the MMR example, using the phrase “MMR parent’s experiences” will produce different results. Also try reversing the keyword order; but even then you may find the results dominated by large organisations with the occasional parent site referenced.

Also consider using other less well known search engines in addition to your usual preferred search engine to gather extra information. Here are some to think about:

http://turbo10.com/
http://www.dogpile.com/
http://www.izito.com/
http://www.hakia.com/
http://www.stumpedia.com/

In addition consider searching for blog posts rather than using established media for your search. 99% percent of website content will not show up in standard searches conducted in the traditional way.. So it is time to get creative when searching the web to find real and valuable content.

Please contact the owner of this site if you have your own search recommendations so this can be included.

The longest day in Denmark has a remarkable 17 hours of daylight and long dusky periods. To experience Midsummer nigh,t also known as St John’s night or Sankt Hans Aftern, residents of demark head off to the beach and light bonfires whilst eating picnics and barbeques waiting for the light to dim. Several bonfires are lit along North Jutland’s coast. It’s a real family celebration; and there are food stalls, music and entertainment for all.

Former apprentice frontrunner, Jim Eastwood (also nicknamed Jedi Jim by Dara O’Briain), demonstrated his darker side on last night’s The Apprentice. His controlling charm was described as passive aggressive by one of the show’s contributors, Karen Brady. And it did appear at one stage that Jim was not the droid Alan Sugar was looking for.

Jim lost his way. His inability to realise that he should negotiate with an advertising agency on the rate card of a new “freemium” magazine contributed to his team loosing the task whilst he was project manager.

This week the audience clearly saw a darker side to Jim. His smooth Irish charm, which had worked for him so well in previous episodes, now seemed to have a darker side. It was evident that he was now using his “ skills” in a Machiavellian way. This was especially noticeable in the boardroom, where Jim narrowly escaped being fired; this week it was Glen’s turn to leave.

On the task itself, the contestants this week were asked to develop a concept for a free magazine and pre-sell the advertising space to advertising agencies. In fairness, neither side did a particularly good job. Team Venture’s publication, with their tongue in cheek title “Hip Replacement” shocked the agencies with their irreverent name. However, team Logic’s lad’s mag was seen as dated. In the end the dated publication pulled in more revenue and won the task.

Jim’s team could have averted this disaster if the master salesman had spotted that his no negotiation tactics on his first pitch were way off the mark for an untried and newly launched product. Perhaps what was even more surprising is that none of the teams seemed to do much real research on their target demographic. Neither team provided the agencies with any information or projected distribution outlets, target circulation or readerships numbers.

In the after show programme, The Apprentice: You’re Fired, on BBC 2, it became increasing evident that Jim Eastwood had lost his popular support with the public. In a mock up donkey derby style race of the contestants, where the audience was encouraged to cheer or boo to show where the candidates should be placed, Jim was very definitely positioned last. It remains to be seen if Jim can win them over again with his famed mind contol in the coming weeks.

Many a high profile celebrity gets their full bodied hair look from the use of extensions. However, bonded extensions are time consuming to have put in, expensive, and above all can damage the hair. The use of high quality clip-in hair extensions provides an alternative which does not comprise on the full volumising effect.

Bonded hair extensions can cause terrible damage to the hair as they are attached very close to the scalp. This can place a strain on the hair root follicle often causing the real hair to break. This in turn can lead to unsightly bald patches.

Clip-in hair extensions provide a safe alternative to bonded hair extensions. The results can be fantastic, giving a full volume effect. Many professional models have taken to wearing the clip in extensions as they realise the wear and tear bonded extension have caused to their won locks.

One of the UK’s leading hair extension retailers provides silicone tipped clip in extensions. This retailer has seen an increase in the sale of this modern style of hair extension due to concerns about continued damage from bonded extensions. Owner of Wonderland Wigs, Samantha McClements, believes that beautiful hair should not be sought at the expense of damaging your own locks; and promotes the use of safe style hair extensions so that women can have fun experimenting with their hair without paying a heavy price.
